I'm Kat, a professional genealogist and the researcher behind Tracing Time.

For me, genealogy is about more than names and dates — it is about identity, connection, and understanding the many ways families are formed. It is also about uncovering the stories of the ancestors whose lives and experiences have shaped who we are today.

I approach genealogy very much as a form of investigative work: following the evidence, questioning assumptions, and piecing together the stories behind the records. It is a process I find hugely rewarding, particularly when it leads to meaningful discoveries and answers for the people I work with.

My interest in genealogy began with my own family story. Having been adopted as an infant, researching my family history gave me the opportunity to explore and build family trees for both my adoptive and biological families. That experience continues to shape the way I approach my work today and has fostered a particular interest in genetic genealogy, using DNA testing and match analysis to help answer questions that traditional records alone cannot always resolve.

Over time, what began as a personal interest developed into a professional career. I now work with both individual and commercial clients on a wide range of projects, from creating family trees and family history reports to resolving complex research problems, identifying unknown ancestors through DNA analysis, and supporting wider heritage and community-based research.

In 2024, I completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies at the University of Strathclyde, graduating with Distinction. Alongside more than twenty years of research experience, this has further strengthened my approach to genealogical work, with a clear focus on evidence-based research, critical analysis, and well-supported conclusions.

Alongside my client work, I am involved in document preservation and archiving projects and am currently developing a one-place study of Frognall, Lincolnshire, exploring the lives, occupations, and wider history of those who lived there across generations.

In 2025, I was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Register of Qualified Genealogists, where I contribute to supporting professional standards, education, and professional development within the field.
